Looking to do some basic motocamping with my brother this year. Anybody have some good spots? We will be on sport-tourers (VFR/ST3), so nothing too far off the beaten path. I scouted out Doughton Park and Julian Price Park, which are both good options.

Anybody got any recommendations, war stories, pics?

Hard to beat Blue ridge Motorcycle campground on US 276 just a stone's throw from Waynesville. They serve food on the weekends and have showers, clean bathrooms and lots of chairs for bench racing. Downtown Waynesville has some nice restaurants too.

If you are headed north say towards Fancy Gap, Willville is another MC only campground in Meadows of Dan Va. Beautiful campground, nice owner, clean restrooms. Not many food options in the area though. 1-2 restaurants 1 mile away.

Parkway campgrounds were/are going through some improvements. Not so long ago NO parkway campground had hot showers. Now a few are supposed to but I haven't stayed in one for many years. As far as State run or Forest service Campgrounds, Davidson River (Brevard NC) Grayson Highlands ( near White Top Va) and Fairy stone SP in VA are all nice places to camp.

I really prefer the MC campgrounds because you are surrounded by like minded people, riders. Even the Harley guys that camp are enthusiasts and not the starbucks posers.

If you want any tips on must have gear etc let me know. I bought my "new to me" FJR1300 to get back into moto camping. Will be doing some of that this fall.

I knew you'd be the first to post... :)

I think I have the gear list squared away, but will share for input once finished.

I hadn't considered motorcycle specific campgrounds really, just the regular public stuff. I will have to look into it. BRMC off of 276 sounds awesome. I love that area SW of Asheville.

Anybody else got some favorites?

I can only 2nd what Ken said. And Willville at Meadows of Dan may not have many restaurants around but it's home of the hungry hillbilly! :D They have a bbq joint across the street now, and Tuggles Gap restaurant isn't far either.

I have never been through Meadows of Dan, but I have been on 58 plenty of times. Just never made it that far east on 58. Do they let you have your own campfire there? I know that is not allowed at BRMC.

Just an update. There is some awesome primitive camping on the western ridge of Linville Gorge. Nice roadside spots with HUGE VIEWS. No permit needed and completely free. Just pack in/pack out.

The fire road to get there can be... challenging.. in some spots, so an ADV/Dual Sport/etc. bike is recommended.

Heading back to that same spot on the western ridge of Linville Gorge this weekend. Taking the recently acquired 07 DL1000. Should be a good time :)

I've spent many nights on top and in the bottom of the gorge. Never with a moto though.

Yeah, I do love it up there. Great views. Great hiking. Easy to get to. My brothers are going to meet me up there in a 4Runner, so it's gonna be a great time.. :)

Will at willville doesn't allow individual campfires but has a big communal bonfire every night, weather permitting. Willeville is a great spot and there is a lot to see and do it in the local area. There are some really good winery's in the area and the little town of Floyd is really neat and close by. If an individual campfire is what you want, there is a brp campground about 8-10 miles north of Meadows of Dan at Rocky Knob. Clean bathrooms but no showers.

Here are a couple pics from two weekends ago. Successful trip, even if it was a bit wet and windy getting to the camp-site that Friday on Old 105.... crazy slick with mud up there. Luckily, I made it without dumping the Strom loaded with camping gear.

Here's a video from that same trip.

My first time off-pavement on a motorcycle since I was 13. It was pretty wet/muddy heading down Old 105. Being on a loaded VStrom with Shinko 705's set at 40 psi sure didn't make it easier...
